India gets tough with ban on 25-year-old oil tankers, bulk carriers and other ships

India is banning all foreign and Indian ships above 25 years of age from calling Indian ports to load and unload cargo, according to a report by the India Times on Monday (27 February).
This includes oil tankers, bulk carriers and general cargo vessels.
This is part of the plan to encourage a younger fleet in order to improve safety and meet global rules on ship emissions.
However, according to the India Times, the restriction will only be applicable to Indian and foreign flag vessels that require a license from India’s Directorate General of Shipping under Section 406 and 407 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958.
“Further the age limit will also be applicable to vessels granted exemption from licensing requirements under Section 406 and 407 of the M S Act, commonly referred to as Cabotage rules,” according to the report.
